Shoulder & Elbow Replacement Shoulder & Elbow Replacement

Shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure in which all or part of the glenohumeral joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Such joint replacement surgery generally is conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage. In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial components, called a prosthesis.

Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder Replacement 1. Rotator Cuff Tendons: These are groups of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, providing stability and allowing for smooth movement of the arm.

2. Glenoid Cavity: The glenoid cavity is a shallow, cup-like structure in the shoulder blade that holds the ball of the upper arm bone, forming the shoulder joint.

3. Humerus Head: The top of the upper arm bone (humerus) forms the ball of the shoulder joint. In shoulder replacement, this part is often replaced with a metal prosthesis.

Elbow Replacement

Elbow Replacement 1. Humerus: The humerus is the upper arm bone that connects to the elbow joint. In elbow replacement, the damaged end of the humerus is replaced with a metal prosthesis.

2. Ulna: The ulna is one of the two forearm bones that connects to the elbow joint. In some elbow replacement surgeries, the damaged part of the ulna is also replaced with a prosthetic component.

3. Radius: The radius is the other forearm bone that helps form the elbow joint. Like the ulna, it may be involved in replacement depending on the extent of the damage.
